Nutritious Desserts and a Well-Balanced Diet

In previous weeks we looked at the negative effects of sugar and other processed food items. For this week’s edition of Food Savvy Friday, we’re going to discuss how you can satisfy your sweet tooth and feed your body super fuel all at once—and all while getting the same great taste! It starts with replacing your favorite desserts with more nutritious options.

A study was done showing that if Americans consumed one additional serving of fruits or vegetables a day, the nation would save $5 billion in health care expenditures and prevent 30,301 deaths from heart disease and stroke annually. While this may be hard to grasp, it shows the common theme presented in Food Savvy Friday: Food is medicine. We’re here to remind you that you can treat your body right, give it the super fuel it deserves, and still enjoy sweet tasting desserts.

Here’s a healthy dessert option that requires just a few ingredients! Start by coring an apple, fill it with fresh berries, and pour your favorite juice on top. Then pop it in the oven until the apple softens. Let it cool, and enjoy! Notice how great you feel afterward, and just how tasty and easy it is to prepare.

Healthy dessert alternatives like the one shared above are great for those who like things sweet and also want to increase the quantity of fruit consumed each day. By finding ways to be creative with healthy, whole foods, you can feel good about what you’re eating and enjoy it, too.
