You Know What They Say… It’s the Most Important Meal of the Day!

Almost everyone has been told at least once in their life that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. That being said, not everyone is a morning person. And whether you are or not, I’m sure you’ve had the occasional morning that just does not go to plan – you’re rushing out of the house, you can’t find something to wear, and the last thing on your mind is preparing a meal. We’ve all been there. And besides that, some people just don’t feel hungry in the morning. All of this is understandable! However, eating breakfast has so many benefits, and with the right routine, eating breakfast can be an impactful and easy way to start your day off right.

Benefits of Breakfast

Eating breakfast is a great way to keep your body feeling balanced and energized. We might not realize it, but breakfast plays some really important roles throughout the day. Studies show that eating it can improve things like memory, alertness, concentration, problem-solving ability, and mood. All of these functions are crucial in helping you power through your day. Scientists also suggest that pairing protein with carbohydrates at breakfast is a perfect combo – the carbs will give you the energy to get you started, and the protein will help keep you full, helping your body carry out its many functions. Yogurt with granola, banana and peanut butter, or a bagel with cream cheese are some perfect pairings to start off the day.

What if I’m not hungry?

There are many different hormones which play a role in sending hunger cues when it’s time to eat. Some research suggests that an increase in stress hormones could be to blame for why folks aren’t hungry in the morning. However, others propose that because everyone’s bodies are different, some people are simply not going to be hungry until later on. But that’s ok! Breakfast doesn’t have to be a large, filling meal. If you aren’t very hungry, it can be something as small as an apple to kickstart your metabolism. You can also consider the options below for ways to start making breakfast a part of your routine!

Tips for Never Skipping Breakfast

I’m sure we’ve all heard it before, but preparing meals ahead of time is a great way to make sure you get the nutrition you need throughout the day. There are a lot of things that you can prepare the night before, such as overnight oats, which are quick to make and easy to grab on your way out the door. That way, if you aren’t hungry yet, you can always eat it a little later. Another tip is to wake up slightly earlier, giving yourself more time awake before you have to leave the house. This can help to wake you up, get your body running, and send those hunger cues before you’re already out the door.

All this advice being said, the best thing you can do for your body, when it really comes down to it, is listen. If you are certain that eating breakfast is not something that makes you feel your best, then do whatever makes you feel good. Eating is an individual experience, and while there is great advice out there, it’s always best to trust your gut (literally)!
